I SAT AT THE LONG BAR of Hops and Barley and ordered the Club. Turns out sleuthing was hungry business. I sipped on my Diet Coke and tapped my feet in time to Brooks and Dunn playing on the jukebox while I waited. I ignored the suspicious glance that Ryan Hops sent my way as he pretended not to avoid me. That was alright. I wasn’t here to see Mr. Personality.

Glenn set the basket in front of me, and I stared at it in alarm. “Wow. Can I get a box for at least half of that? I think I just made supper.”

“Already on it.” He plopped a takeout container next to me and snagged my glass to refill it.

“That looks amazing, you know. I don’t know how you stay in business if you’re serving that to everyone.”

He laughed. “It keeps em coming back for more, doesn’t it?” His expression turned sober. “But somehow I don’t think you are here to admire my Triple Club Sandwich,” he finished.

“Guilty. No, I wanted to pick your brain about something. I stopped by the Junk Haus yesterday, and had a talk with Red Argus.”

He grimaced. “Cheerful sort, isn’t he?”

I snorted, “Now that is a joke. He denies any involvement, of course. Said he was watching Storage Wars the night Jed died.”

Glenn nodded. “He’s religious about that show for sure, so I wouldn’t doubt it.”

“As I was leaving, he told me it was Jacob Crawley that was kicked off the team over his involvement in the fight Jed caused.”

“That’s right. Jacob has a drinking problem and his team captain, Spence, isn’t long on patience for that sort of thing. Jacob fell off the wagon that night. That job of his gets to him sometimes, and one thing led to another. It was a miracle he didn’t throw a punch himself. Maybe he was too drunk to swing.”

I took two of the four halves of the sandwich and a handful of fries and transferred them to the black container. “What’s your take on it? Do you think Jacob could have been good for it?”

A snort of laughter three stools down startled us both. Jack Lovelace picked up his beer and wandered over to take the empty stool on my right.

“Jacob Crawley can be an idiot. But he’s no murderer.”

My eyes narrowed on his confident smirk. “And just how might you know that? And what were you doing eavesdropping on our conversation?”

He grinned, and my tummy gave an odd flutter. “Of course. When you talk about my friends behind their back, I pay attention.”

I scowled back. “He isn’t my friend and I’m conducting a murder investigation here,” I added, my chin jutting forward stubbornly.

We’d both forgotten about Glenn. He cleared his throat. “Listen, I’m going to leave you two to discuss it. I’ve got to get back to work. Nice seeing you, Juli.”

Jack stared hard at Glenn’s retreating back. “Getting awfully chummy, weren’t you?”

I sent him a cheeky smile, “He’s nice, isn’t he?” I agreed.

His expression darkened.
